Choosing a Grommet Hole Size for Cable Routing

Rubber Grommets1 min readExplore product profiles

Choosing a grommet hole size starts with the panel and cable assembly, not the visible flange diameter. A suitable part must fit the cutout and panel thickness while providing the required cable clearance.

Separate the mounting hole from the bore

Use the part drawing to identify the specified panel cutout, groove width, flange diameter and bore. The bore describes the passage through the grommet. Two parts with the same bore can require different panel openings.

Check connectors and cable routing

Measure the cable or bundle and any connector that must pass through during assembly. Confirm the installation sequence and clearance around the flange. Specify cable support or retention separately from edge protection.

Compare dimensions before selecting a part

Use the catalog organized by mounting-hole size to compare reference dimensions. Check the complete drawing and material requirements before ordering. For a profile outside the standard range, send a drawing or existing sample for manufacturability review.
