Cable and wire passage

Rubber Cable and Wire Grommets

Specify a rubber grommet around the panel opening where a cable or wire bundle passes through. Start with the cable, cutout and panel thickness, then compare round or oval profiles. Confirm the compound and installation requirements for the selected part before ordering.

01 / PROCUREMENT REQUIREMENTS

Start with the cable route through the panel

The cable passage and the panel cutout are different dimensions. Describe both before choosing a profile.

Single cable or wire bundle

Measure the cable jacket outside diameter. For a bundle, provide its width and height at the panel, including any wrapping. Compare those measurements with the passage shown on the grommet drawing.

Round or oval opening

A round cutout can be compared with the round grommet families. An oval opening needs both axes and its orientation. Check the groove dimensions against the cutout rather than using the outside flange dimensions.

Installation sequence

State whether the cable is fitted before or after its connector and whether both panel faces are accessible. Check the assembly sequence against the selected profile; do not assume every grommet can be installed over a terminated cable.

02 / PROCUREMENT REQUIREMENTS

Compare the complete fit in the existing catalogs

Use the original product drawings and dimension rows to identify a candidate. A single diameter does not establish an interchangeable part.

Passage, groove and panel thickness

Compare inside diameter, groove diameter and groove width together. Then check outside diameter and overall thickness for clearance. Keep the stated units with the part number, especially when browsing separate metric and inch tables.

Use the profile that matches the layout

The size chart brings together round and oval geometries. If the assembly calls for a sleeve extending beyond the panel, review the dedicated long-neck drawings as a separate structural option.

Confirm the role of the grommet

An ordinary cable grommet is not automatically a certified strain-relief device, cable gland or electrical insulation system. Identify any pull-out, sealing or electrical acceptance requirement separately for application review.

03 / PROCUREMENT REQUIREMENTS

Turn a size selection into a production inquiry

A useful inquiry combines the selected geometry with the conditions it will encounter in the assembly.

Material and service conditions

Provide continuous and peak temperatures, contact fluids and outdoor exposure. State required hardness and color, and confirm the proposed compound for the part. A catalog dimension does not confirm availability in every material.

Part number and purchase requirements

Send the original catalog part number with units, quantity, delivery requirements and destination. Include the cable and panel measurements so the quoted configuration can be checked against the installation.

When the listed geometry does not fit

Supply your drawing or an existing sample, including tolerances and acceptance requirements. Custom manufacture proceeds through manufacturability review, quotation, tooling, sampling and production to the agreed specification.

Before you specify a part

Rubber Cable and Wire Grommets: purchasing questions

Confirm the complete part specification and acceptance requirements for your assembly.

Which measurement should I use to search for a cable grommet?

Record the cable outside diameter or bundle dimensions, panel cutout and panel thickness. Identify each measurement by name and unit. The grommet inside diameter describes the passage; the groove dimensions describe its fit in the panel.

Can the same grommet be used for a cable and a wire harness?

Compare the actual passage requirements and assembly sequence. A harness may have a different outline or connector arrangement from a single cable. Confirm the selected geometry and installation using the intended assembly.

Does a rubber wire grommet provide certified strain relief?

Do not infer certified strain relief or pull-out performance from the material or profile name. State the required retention and applicable acceptance conditions so the proposed assembly can be reviewed.

When should I consider a long-neck grommet?

Review a long-neck profile when your drawing calls for a sleeve extending from the panel. Compare the sleeve dimensions, passage, mounting groove and surrounding space. It is a distinct profile choice rather than a requirement for every cable opening.

Can I request a size that is absent from the chart?

Yes. Send your drawing or an existing sample with the cable and panel dimensions, material requirements and quantity. We can review manufacturability and the quotation, tooling and sampling requirements for custom production.

Prepare your production inquiry

Send the part reference or your drawing or existing sample details, required quantity and service conditions. Confirm manufacturing feasibility, sample arrangements and production requirements for your specification.
