A 5/16 rubber grommet is a version of a classical hole grommet. This kind of rubber grommet is arguably the most commonly used one. Due to its versatility, the application of this rubber grommet is vast. Most of the time, a 5/16 rubber grommet with be 60 shore A hard, and about 3/8″ thick making it quite durable, as well. 

Seeing how a rubber grommet such as this one is durable and circularly shaped, the best application for it would be to cover or insulate the hole in a panel, allowing you to run cables through it safely. The grommet will perfectly cover up the hard and sharp edges, regardless of the material of the panel, which makes it suitable for many industries and businesses.

Another thing that we could change about this grommet if you wanted us to is the material from which the grommet is made. We could use natural rubber, nitrile, neoprene, Buna-N, EPDM, FKM, silicone, and so on. Different materials will also give the grommet a different set of properties –  properties like heat resistance, UV light resistance, flame retardancy, etc. For instance, an FKM rubber grommet can withstand very high temperatures, yet a natural rubber one can’t. However, an FKM one won’t be able to sustain very low temperatures, but natural rubber ones will.
