Rubber grommets are made from a wide variety of rubbers. Aside from natural rubber and silicone, another very popular choice for rubber grommets is EPDM. EPDM grommet can be used in a variety of ways, just like any other rubber grommet. However, the most common use-case scenario for the EPDM grommet would be as a plug. Most commonly, an EPDM rubber grommet would be inserted into a hole to properly plug and seal it. But that is not all. An EPDM grommet would also offer excellent protection and would eliminate sharp edges. Aside from plugs, EPDM grommets can also be used as regular grommets or sleeves through which you can run cables and wires without worrying about any of them getting damaged in any way. Also, they could be used to damped vibrations.
EPDM is one of the most low temperature resilient rubbers, which is why it is often used in refrigerators, although not in the form of a grommet. An EPDM grommet can withstand temperatures as low as negative 40 degrees Celsius and as high as 150 degrees Celsius, making it one of the most temperature resilient rubber out of all, especially when it comes to cold.
Generally speaking, EPDM is not the hardest rubber, and grommets are usually between 30 and 90 Shore A hard, which is hard enough to be strong, tear-resistant and durable but still flexible enough to be used in various situations. While we’re on the subject of hardness, EPDM grommets possess excellent tear strength and possibly even better abrasion resistance, which makes them not only durable and long-lasting but also very good at their job. And, last but not least, compared to some other rubber grommets, the ones made from EPDM generally tend to cost less but last longer, making them one of the most valuable grommets out of all.
