What is a plug grommet? A plug grommet is a ring that is inserted around a sharp material like metal, wood, sharp plastic etc. These are used to reduce or to completely prevent the wear and tear of wirese going through the hole plugged with a grommet. The wire itself remains protected, but the cable itself maintains its insulation properties for longer which is another benefit. Insulating bushings is the name for grommets in electrical applications. There are many different shapes starting from the oval ones, to various U-shapes. Larger shapes can have irregular shapes and long sharp edges so they need irregular shaped grommets fitted with strips of continues length. This is usually referred to as grommet edging in the industry. This type of plug grommets are common in implementations that can go from data center cabinets to more complex ones, for example, the automotive industry. Plug grommets are typically made out of rubber with greaat wear and tearp properties. In other words, it’s much durable than any other regular rubber. Also, consider that these grommets can be made from different materials like synthetic rubber or nitrile rubber – NBR that can be used in oil because of its high resistance properties. Synthetic rubbers like neoprene grommets are the best flame retardants. FKM grommets or fluoro rubber grommets can be used in strong acid or alkaline environments. Silicone grommets are mostly used for skin touch and food safe touch.
The plug grommet sizes can differ. For rubber grommet plugs there are 3 important sizes. An inside diameter- the wire diameter should be just a bit smaller than the inside diameter of the grommet. Groove diameter is the diameter of the opening that you should put the grommet in. The opening diameter and the groove diameter should be equal. Groove width is the thickness that you should put the grommet in. The groove width should be equal to the thickness of the board. You can choose the grommets shape, length, and color as well. Other than abrasion prevention, the grommets can improve dust, air and water resistance.
